Wayne Birmingham: The man behind the John Harmidy Sr. dart tournaments

In September 2003, I met James Morrison, founder of "Jimbo's Crusade Against Cancer", when he joined my Monday Knights & Ladies Dart League.Jim was running various fundraisers to help the crusade, so I offered to run a Dart Tournament for him.

My friend John Harmidy Sr. was a well respected and liked member of the dart community who had passed away. Knowing his name might have some clout, I started the John Harmidy Dart Tournament in his honor.

On a October Saturday afternoon, 48 darters of various caliber, gathered together for the First Inaugural John Harmidy Dart Tournament. With tremendous support from John's family, friends and the darting community. it was a huge success. We had a fun filled afternoon. We sold food, half & half tickets, got donations plus entry fees amassing over a $ 1,000.00. Over the years we've shaved heads, collected pennies, had raffles, anything to fill the coffers for this great cause.

This was how it all started. Since then we have had 22 successful tournaments in the last 13 years. We have honored John and raised thousands of dollars for this great cause.Flourishing events, and great times do not just happen without a terrific group of people who have joined us over the years.

I would like to thank the Harmidy Family and all the participants for their continued support. I would also like to thank Jim for giving me this opportunity to be a part of his crusade.

It is us that want to thank-you Wayne, for all your hard work and dedication. It is an honor having you by our side the past 13 years.
