About Us

In 1997, West Island Crusade against Cancer was born, but as an event called Jimbo’s Squash-a-thon. One man playing squash for 8 hours against all comers who were willing to make a donation. No one dreamed then how this event would grow.

1999. Jimbo’s Squash-a-thon becomes a registered charity under the name West Island Crusade against Cancer (WICAC). Our first president, Paula Hassani and her husband Ferri were primarily responsible for the establishment of the registered charity status and for the recruitment of the many volunteers who have helped support WICAC over the years. It is through the enthusiasm of these volunteers that WICAC events have been such a success over the years. (Click here to read a short biography of Paula Hassani)

Our first event (other than squash) as a registered charity was a concert on the tennis courts of Club West Island featuring Bowser and Blue. Approximately 900 people were entertained that evening and the tradition of the Annual Gala was established.

The Gala has evolved over the years from theater seating to a lavish Gala with two levels of buffets, spectacular silent auction, raffles and much more.

A high standard of entertainment at this event brings people coming back. Bowser and Blue (again by popular demand) , Joey Elias, Ernie Butler and a variety of talented comedians. Recently musical groups such as Day Tripper (a Beatle cover band) and Craig Morrison and Vintage Wine have been added with great success.

New activities over the years include the Bats for Charity soft ball tournament organized by Linda Noury, Pub Quizzes, dart tournaments run by Wayne Birmingham and John Harmidy, and a golf day currently run in association with Club West Island.

And there is always room to grow….Bring us your ideas.
