ABOUT OUR FOUNDER
In 1997, Jim Morrison, born and raised in West Island Montreal wanted to give back to his community. He had recently lost both his father and uncle to cancer and felt compelled to thank those who had helped them the most when it was needed.Being very active in the West Island squash circuit, Jim organized “Jimbo’s Squash-a-thon” to raise finds for the local chapter of NOVA West Island (at the time called Victorian Order of Nurses).
He vowed to play squash for 8 hours and take on all challengers who were willing to make a donation. True to his word, he played for 8 straight hours pausing only for water breaks. This first event raised $1,200 and has kept going since. The Squash-a-thon has even raised as much as $20,000 in a single year.
Now that W.I.C.A.C. is a registered charity, Jim dedicates his enthusiasm, commitment and energy in promoting and helping to organize various W.I.C.A.C fundraising events.
Additionally, Jim has been a volunteer competitive softball coach for the past 15 years, bringing his team to 7 playoff finals, winning 3 championships, and co-coaches a high caliber tournament team. Thus far he has coached 495 straight games without an absence! He was nominated as Coach of the Year twice since the award was started only a few years ago, and also inducted by his team as an Honorary Player in 2011, through a formal recognition ceremony.
We would also like to add that Jim worked tirelessly with Paula Hassani WICAC'S original president who recently lost the battle to cancer. Read more about Paula and her work with WICAC.
Jim is guided by a spirit of fair play and mutual respect amongst people. Whether collaborating on a fundraiser, organizing a team-building event or planning for an important match, his utmost priority is to ensure a wonderful experience for all who participate, and to uphold a healthy and fun environment that instills a sense of community and camaraderie.
With volunteerism and fundraising being such a large part of his life, Jim appreciates all the W.I.C.A.C. supporters and volunteers of all capacities, and thanks them for their crucial collaboration.
