REPORT – CRUSADE AGAINST CANCER 10KM SAT 3 JULY 2010

Having just returned from Ottawa’s National Capital Race weekend, where approximately 40 000 people run in various events, I felt it was time for a change of pace. I heard of a local race with 1, 5, and 10Km distances to raise funds for the West Island Crusade Against Cancer. This was a perfect fit as I knew the race organizers and both my parents have been touched by cancer.

I chose the 10Km distance, and trained for it starting a few days after returning from Ottawa. My wife, chose the 5Km distance, bringing our son for the ride in his running stroller. We also invited a friend who did her first 5Km race, and hopes to complete the 10Km distance at the Montreal Marathon weekend this fall. This was a great way for her to get initiated to the sport since this was a fun run, and not as intimidating for her first time out.

After weeks of training, we arrived early to the race site to find lots of parking, and race preparations well under way. We got acquainted with our surroundings and got a chance to chat with many of the participants and organizers whom we knew from other activities in the community.

The Red Barn was an ideal location as there was ample parking nearby, there were sufficient bathrooms (no stinky port-a-potties here), and it provided protection from the elements. That being said, it was a beautiful day with sunny skies and 20*C, we couldn’t have asked for better weather. The race was well supported by the Running Room, local radio station CHOM 97.7FM, and Baie D’Urfe Rescue. After a warm-up, and a few words from the organizers, we were off to the races!

The course was a showcased much of what scenic Baie D’Urfe has to offer, passing by parks, schools, and the community centre. Along the course race marshals, and a water station provided many cheers for the participants, and the many trees offered welcomed shade to the runners and walkers along the course. The course even provided a challenge to some of the more seasoned runners, with much of the elevation gain coming early on the 5Km loop course, with a hill just before the 1Km mark. The start/finish area provided many of the services runners come to expect from large events as stated above. This also included race photography and water bottles and snacks being offered post race.

Following the 5 and 10Km events came the 1Km event for kids and the young at heart. Participants all got an official race number and a helium balloon. After their very own warm up, they to had the chance to run or walk the 1Km course just like mum & dad. Upon arrival, they even got a finishers medal to commemorate the event.

The activity finished with many prizes and a grand prize being awarded to participants. Everybody left with a smile on their face, indeed a job well done. See you next year!
